Research Interests

My group is interested in the application of Probabilistic Models in Computational Molecular Biology. Probabilistic models are useful in domains where there is a great deal of uncertainty or missing information. They have proved to be very useful in many areas of Computational Biology and Bioinformatics. Probabilistic models are often thought of as generative models, i.e. one can imagine generating data from them in a probabilistic manner. The degree of realism with which they describe a system can vary depending on the available knowledge and data, from highly simplified statistical models to more realistic process models. The main idea is that the model parameters themselves are treated as random quantities and their values have to be estimated from data. We are interested in using Bayesian methods to estimate the parameters of these models from data, and to associate these estimates with credibility intervals. For example, we have recently developed a model for the analysis of genome-wide gene expression data where we can estimate the effect of regulatory interactions. More recently we have become interested in more realistic systems-level models and non-parametric models. Other relevant interests of my group are functional genomics technologies, comparative genomics, molecular evolution and phylogeny.
