Position

2nd Year PhD student

Affiliation

Robertson group, Smith Building, FLS. I am supervised by David Robertson (FLS) and Roberts Stevens (CS) who are both at the University of Manchester.

Research Interests

I have worked mainly on stochastic simulation models of evolutionary systems. Furthermore, I have developed implementations of some of the more common forms of biologically inspired computational models (e.g. genetic algorithms, neural networks). Biological systems are inherently stochastic and it is this random element of exploration that often provides new insights into a system. In addition to this, I often find simulation models a useful entry point into a complex situation, by acting as a form of thought experiment. My current PhD research is not explicitly linked to modelling but I often employ simple simulations to test hypotheses about my data. I am currently trying to complete a simulation project on the nature of "good genes" sexual selection. I am also interested in the visualisation of multidimensional data and have worked on a few bits of software that address the needs of my PhD research. I work mostly with Java and R.
