Research Interests
We're developing computational models of solute and water transport across epithelia, particularly absorptive and secretory epithelia in the mammalian airways, kidney, pancreas, intestine etc. This involves modelling the transport of solutes into the cells across one surface membrane and out across the other, with the inevitable implications for intracellular solute concentrations, cell volume and membrane potential, and also paracellular movements through the tight junctions between the cells. Interest focuses mainly on electrolytes (Na+, K+, Cl-, HCO3-, H+) where we can compare predicted behaviour of the model with experimental results from various physiological techniques in use in our research group. Models are constructed in a modular fashion using MATLAB and the graphical Simulink interface.
