The Manchester Doctoral Training Centre for Systems Biology
The PhD at the DTC is a four year programme. Applications are open to students with an undergraduate or masters degree in Life Sciences (biological or medical sciences),
Physical Sciences (Physics, Chemistry, etc.), Mathematics or Engineering.
Applications are being taken via the University and Faculty web sites; jobs.ac.uk and findaphd.com, as well as directly to the DTC (see below). Applications are welcomed all year round, with specific dates set aside for short-listing (with a view to interviewing) - January 15, April 15 and July 15, based on the following eligibility criteria: UK Students are eligible for fees and full stipend (£15.6k per annum). EU Students are eligible for fees, eligible only for stipend if they have studied/worked in the UK for at least 3 years prior to applying for a PhD. Non EU Students are not eligible for either stipend or fees but may source their own funding. In cases of exceptional quality, both EU and non EU students may apply for extenuating circumstances. Each year more than 10 PhD Studentships will be offered to successful candidates with degrees in Life Sciences, Physical Sciences, Mathematics or Engineering. The DTC is located in the new Manchester Interdisciplinary Biocentre with state-of-the-art facilities for Systems Biology. It is affiliated with the Manchester Centre for Integrative Systems Biology, one of the six centres of Systems Biology in the UK. It has direct links with relevant industries (AstraZeneca, Unilever, Pfizer etc.) through the placement of two industry members on the Management Board, through actual integration in industry labs and through parts of the course being taught by scientists and directors from industry. The University of Manchester is uniquely positioned to offer a sense of novelty as a result of the merger of two research-intensive Universities: UMIST and the Victoria University of Manchester. The University was voted top graduate employment university in the UK and its Careers Service was also voted as the best among British universities.
